Homework Tips to Try
Establish a routine*
Find a location in the house where homework will be done.
-Ask your child where they think the best place to work would be.
-Discuss pros and cons of each setting.
Set up a homework center.
-Set up a clear workspace with all the materials needed for completing assignments.
-Include a bulletin board with a calendar to keep track of long-term assignments.
Establish a homework time.
-Get in the habit of doing homework at the same time every day.
-Talk with your child in order to find the time suited for them. (Some children need a break after school,
others may like to do homework while still in school mode)
-Try and have homework complete before dinner or as early in the evening as possible.
Establish a daily homework schedule.
-Sit down with your child and discuss the nights homework assignments. Prioritize assignments.
-Make sure your child understands the assignments and has the necessary materials.
-Remind your child to write down the homework assignment in it's entirety.
Get organized for tomorrow.
-Remind your child to pack the backpack before going to bed.
When helping your child.
-Try to be aware of how your child is being taught math, and don't teach strategies and shortcuts that conflict with the approach the teacher is using.
-Check in with the teacher and ask what you can do to help. Ask the teacher about online resources that you can use with your child at home.
